Day 10. Alternative

Sunday 15th May 2022

The schedule for Day 10 involved walking from Tarbert to Aline Community Woodland, a great deal of which would be along the road. Rather than do this we opted for "The Postman's Route" from Tarbert to Rhenigidale...... and what a good choice that was. Although a short walk, it was the most scenic of all the walks that we did in the Outer Hebrides.

Before being connected by road in 1989, this path was the main overland route to Rhenigidale. Although boat would have been the preferred method of travel for many, the path was the route taken by generations of postmen on a thrice-weekly basis. This hand-engineered path probably started out as a rough route that would have been difficult to follow during periods of poor weather and snow. In 1912 the Parish Council of Harris raised considerable funds to upgrade the path to an engineered track. After the road was built to Rhenigidale, this route was no longer an essential means of access and the path deteriorated. It has been restored more recently for recreation purposes.

Rhenigdale

The road to Tarbert. At this point we daced a 6 kilometer walk along an asphalt road, which was not too appealing, especially after the enjoyment of the mountain track. Fortunately we got a mobile phone signal and Sue came to pick us up.
